Let’s find the new by looking back at the old. Each month I make a new playlist that slowly gets full with my favourite songs of that month. August wasn’t a particularly stunning month, chock full of academic essays and stress, but I did manage to find a couple of gems in my down time. But I’m not going to lie.
My music taste can be a little trashy at times, a LOT trashy at other times but it can also be the cause of finding some brilliant works of art. So I thought I would share some of my picks with you in the hopes that you would be able to find something that you like.
LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO BY TAYLOR SWIFT
Because of course. Taylor Swift is one of the only people that I’ve seen in concert so it would be safe to call me a fan but this wasn’t her best song. If I get lost in the moment it can make me feel badass, but when I actually listen to the song it doesn’t appeal to me. The chorus is clumsy, way too repetitive and kind of cringe? Don’t even get me started on the video.
Why? Oh, ’cause she’s dead!
NOW YOU KNOW BY ICON FOR HIRE
I thought this was an amazingly feminist song that takes an honest look at women in the music industry. It also has an awesome singer/rapper who takes the lead in the song – the music video is also pretty cute! I’ve now realised that this song (or the music video at least) came out in 2015, so I guess I’m kind of behind in the music scene. Oh well, good music is good music!
They don’t gotta be like me
STRIP THAT DOWN BY LIAM PAYNE
To be completely honest, I never really paid very much attention to him when he was still a part of One Direction. Which, as it turns out, is a very good thing. Not because he’s a terrible musician, but because he’s so good. The song has a brilliant beat, great rhyme and his voice is beautiful. I think that if I had paid a little more attention to him while he was in his boy band, I might not have even listened to it.
I used to be in 1D, now I’m free.
LONELY NIGHT BY FIFTH HARMONY
People have made comparisons to Little Mix’s song “You Gotta Not” and I can definitely see it. However, I still like the message that the song portrays and the fact that someone else has said it (in a different way mind you) doesn’t dissuade me from liking it. It’s a little more chill, and a little less sassy than Little Mix‘s version but it’s still good.
Get ya, get ya, get ya shit together
UK ACCENT BY FABIAN MAZUR
This is a song with absolutely no substance. There are hardly any spoken lines and the rapper pronounces the word ‘accent‘ in a very very odd way. Maybe it’s the way people from Copenhagen say it? I’m not sure. Anyway, I found it through a vine (RIP) edit and feel in love. It makes me feel so hyped when I hear it! Definitely a song to jam out to.
