I Divulge My Fall Reading Slump TBR

September 18, 2017

Help! I’m in a reading slump, and I can’t get out. Is that ironic that I’m doing a top ten tuesdaytuesday tbr post, or perfect for the situation I’m in? I haven’t decided yet. The only thing that I do know for certain, is that reading just isn’t something that I can do right now. My mind isn’t cooperating with my books who aren’t cooperating with my schedule, and so on. As a result of that, this is more like a ‘books that I bought last month, but haven’t really looked at!’ kind of post.

If you click on the subheading / title of each book, it brings you to its respective Goodreads page.

When I Am Through With You

The cover puts me off almost immediately. It looks like an adult thriller (pretty much all of them are repping that red ombré text), and I’m not the hugest fan of those. Well, it’s the detective part that I don’t like. They’re just so cliché, and overdone that they make my skin crawl. However, this book sounds intriguing! It appears to be told from the point of the villain aka not the detective, which should make for good listening.

Waste of Space

If you’re into vapid, satirical, uniquely formatted books – then this is the one for you. I mean, I get that it’s trying to poke fun of reality shows and all that, but I’m not feeling the satire exuding from the pages. There’s enough of it to have me subconsciously realise that it’s there, but it’s not present enough to actually have an impact. Instead, it just comes off as very shallow.

Little Monsters

Honestly, I don’t really have a clue what this is about, but the narrator’s voice sounds lovely. It’s also kind of giving me Mean Girl vibes? Actually, I take that back. No, it’s not. It’s giving me vibes of  “there’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls” which is a motif that I absolutely adore. That’s a quote from Megan Abbot, just in case you were interested.

Like Reading Top Ten Tuesdays? Here Are Some More.

This is two months in the making. I had it on my old phone (HTC M8), but that stopped working that well so I got a new phone (iPhone 6) which didn’t have it on. I could have, of course, downloaded it asap onto my new phone but I’m:

a) lazy, so I didn’t even attempt to do that until at least a week of having my new phone and

b) apparently not very good at tech. I downloaded something that I thought was Parasite onto my phone but turned out to be completely different. It wasn’t even the same colour. How tf does that even happen??

One of Us is Lying

Meh. I was super hyped for this when it first came out, but that excitement has kind of mellowed out. The audiobook doesn’t catch my attention at all (aka I kind of regret buying it). The concept is so interesting, but I get the sense that it hasn’t been carried out properly. No idea why I think that because I haven’t even read it. Perhaps it’s the ugly cover? The other one, not the one in my graphics.

Boring Girls

I can’t quite remember why I bought this, but it should be interesting. Right? Apparently, the main character is, and I quote, “twisted as f*ck” which is always appealing. Although it has got a 3.6 on Goodreads… Oh well, you won’t know if you don’t try.

This was one of my rare Carousell (read my rant about it here) trades. We didn’t really talk very much, but the girl that I traded with seemed sweet! You can’t really tell from the picture, but this cover is actually gorgeous. And the book has a spine that doesn’t bend (those really floppy ones). I love it.

Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook

I got this in a giveaway….a couple of months ago. I’m sorry! I just haven’t really been in the reading mood, and I feel bad that I’ve left it this long. People giveaway books with the assumption of writing a review! Anyway, I’m in love with Christina Henry’s books (the author) and have been looking forward to this ever since it was announced. I just hope that I can get to it soon!

A Natural History of Dragons

In a recent frenzy of ‘I should be supporting local bookshops and buying all of their books’, I picked this up. My pile was a total of 5, but I only bought one. This one. It’s been on my tbr for AGES (think in years), but I’ve always felt like it was a purchase that was too expensive for me to justify getting. However, not everywhere can be as cheap as Book Depository and I am earning a little bit of money now, so I guess that now would be the time to start actively supporting them? It just sucks that this realisation has arisen at the same time as my reading slump.

I really really liked When I am Through With You, and I bet the audio would be good for it. I also thought Little Monsters was good. It wasn’t my FAVE or anything, but I liked the twists. Boring Girls has been on my TBR since it came out, and I think the low GR rating is what made me pause on it. Maybe I’ll put it on my library list 🙂 Hope your reading slump/sluggishness goes away soon!!

I’m terrible with sticking to tbrs so I never do them for myself. But I really want to finally start the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trilogy, and around Halloween might be a good time to read those. Waste of Space and One of Us is Lying are books I have almost bought multiple times but then never ended up going through with it (which is probably a good thing since I should start reading books I already own!). I hope you get out of your reading slump soon!

Oh dear. I can feel myself sliding down there with you as I look at these books. There’s only one thing to be done: Toss them all. (Okay, if you want, just push them under the bed. For now.) Then go to the library and get an absolutely fabulous tale (or two…it’s the library). Zing. You’ll be back.

One of Us is Lying has an interesting premise, but I`ve heard mixed opinions about it. It does remind me of Breakfast Club a lot, so I might still give it a shot.

Ooh, yay! I hope that I, when I actually get around to it, will love it just as much. Happy reading to you too Michelle!
